[Mancini] 2003 Open Men and Open Women Road & Track Performances Of The Year

The results have been tabulated, and on the Open men's side there was fierce competition to crack the Top-25 year end list. A trio of performances by 39 yr. olds topped the list, with Dan Nelson's club record 8k time of 24:13 at Shriner's as the top performance of the year. Seven different runners had performances good enough to earn a ranking on the list. So good were the marks this year that a 4:25 road mile, a 15:21 5k, a 32:04 10k and a 1:11:24 half-marathon were not good enough to make the list.

On the Open women's side, five different runners had performances good enough to earn a ranking on the list. Kathryn Krieger's stellar club record 10k track performance of 33:40 at the Cardinal Invite earned the top performance of the year. An impressive 5 of the Top-20 performances were also club records (road mile, 3k steeplechase, 5k track, 10k track, 10 mile).

[Mancini] 2003 Masters/Senior Men and Masters Women Road & Track Performances Of The Year

In the Masters Women category, 4 women had performances good enough to land them in the Top-20 performances. The group was led by Kim Fanady whose 39:54 10k at Heritage Oaks was the top mark, one of 5 of her own club records that she toppled this year (road mile, 5k, 8k, 10k, 10 mile)

Again this year, the competition in the Masters & Senior Men's category was cutthroat . As with the Masters women list, the rankings were based on age-grading formulas to arrive at a final percentage. This age-graded percentage, theoretically, leveled the playing field, allowing the performances of a 40-year old to be compared with a 55-year old. Five men made the final rankings - 3 Masters and 2 Seniors - ranging in age from 41 to 54. At the top of the list was Jim Gorman's speedy 4:56.7 road mile at the Fleet Feet mile in Davis. Note that, again this year, all of the age-graded percentages of the Top-25 were above 85%. Percentages above 85% are considered national class.
