Top Master Women/Master-Senior Men Performances
In the Masters Women category, 3 women had performances good enough to land them in the Top-20 Performances of the Year. The group was led by Kim Fanady who along the way established no less than 9 club records, from the mile up to the marathon.
The Masters & Senior Men's Top-25 Performances of the Year was probably the most competitive H-E category for 2002. Like the Masters women, the rankings were based on age-grading formulas to arrive at a final percentage. This age-graded percentage, theoretically, leveled the playing field, allowing the performances of a 40-year old to be compared with a 55-year old. Five men made the final rankings - 3 Masters and 2 Seniors - ranging in age from 40 to 53. So competitive was this category that 40-yr. old Craig Steinmaus' sparkling 31:48 10k which ranked 10th among the Open Men, could do no better among the Masters/Seniors, also ranking 10th. Other marks that did not make the Top-25: a 17:06 5k (51-yr. old Don Paul), a 15:44 5k and a 1:11:50 1/2 marathon (Young Man Steinmaus) and a race winning 27:46 8k (50-yr. old Tom Bernhard). Note that all of the age-graded percentages of the Top-25 were above 86%. Percentages above 85% are considered national class. In fact in 2002, our Masters & Senior men produced an unbelievable 39 performances that ranked above 85%. Well done!
